Better Future Blue Mountains City Council is inviting community comment on the proposed street tree maps for Blackheath, prepared by the Blackheath Streetscape Group (BSG) to be included in Council’s Street Tree Masterplan. Mayor, Cr Daniel Myles, said, “Planning for the succession of aged, street trees is becoming an increasingly relevant issue in many Blue Mountains towns. “There is a lot to consider when selecting appropriate street trees, such as infrastructure, bushfire management, traffic safety standards as well as the recognition of existing planting themes and technical specification such as the size, shape and behaviour of the tree."
Out For A Fun Run Entries for The North Face 100 event for 2012 opened on December 1. This highlight on the Australian ultra-running calendar is set amongst the spectacular World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park, and it’s been conquered by plenty of international running talent. Ultra Marathon Man Dean Karnazes rated the event the toughest he had ever done, while Spanish running legend Kilian Jornet said it was much harder than he expected, and very beautiful. With a 28-hour time limit, a limit of under 14 hours to receive the coveted silver belt buckle, and under 20 hours for the bronze belt buckle, the 100 kilometre event will be run across May 19-20.
All Saints' College All Saints’ College year 9 students Courtenay Moller and Charlotte Brew won the American Field Services (AFS) scholarships against very stiff, national competition. “We are absolutely delighted for the girls” said All Saints’ College’s Head, Dr Peter Miller. “Our school is very proud of them and we know they will gain a tremendous amount from the opportunity to visit another country and experience another culture first-hand.” Both students have been studying Japanese as an elective, and their language teacher David Pike lived in Japan for 10 years before taking on his role at All Saints. “This scholarship will add a wonderful, new dimension to studying Japanese and I know that Courtenay and Charlotte will benefit enormously from the experience” he said.
RocTrip At the Petzl RocTrip 2011 in China’s Gétù Valley during October, Matthew Norgrove was one of only a few Australian climbers amongst participants from across the globe. The goal of the annual RocTrip is to bring professional and amateur climbers together in a truly exceptional place, to ‘chalk-up’ one of the world’s best climbing regions on their list of achievements. The geology of the Gétù Valley certainly ranks as an awe-inspiring Climber’s paradise. “Gétù is about a 5-hour bus ride from Guiyang, where the road winds and rolls through some incredible countryside” Matt explained in his blog.
